Donald asks…

The Best Dog Choice to Adopt?

I have 3 other dogs who are mixes. I need a dog who will not fight (as in like attacking, hurting) with the other dogs. A kid-friendly, cuddly, sweet dog. One will go on walks, and learn easily. We have a medium fenced in back yard. Soo they have room to run around. A guard dog. What is the best choice of dog to get? I’m looking towards a bigger dog.

DogTreatMan answers:

I know you don’t want to hear this, but I would stick with the dogs you have. Unless you live on a farm or are The Dog Whisper guy, I would be happy with 3 dogs.

Charles asks…

Is getting a dog the best choice?

My husband and I are thinking about getting a little puppy. She’s 9 months old, already potty trained, healthy, and ADORIBLE! My husband and I are still in college, and between our side jobs, we make finances work. What type of expenses go along with a pet? How much are we looking at for food, shots, etc?

DogTreatMan answers:

Vet can costt up to $60-$1000 depending on your location.
- My dog has her shots and they had to clean her teeth which costed $600.. Rip off huh?
Supplies [food, toys, everything a dog usually has]- can cost up to $100-$200

Puppies need to have a lot of attention-
So if she is home alone all day, it may not be a great idea.

Good Luck

David asks…

I live on a boat, what is my best choice for a dog?

I have a Staffordshire bull terrier, are there any better choices?

DogTreatMan answers:

Schipperke! : ) Where do you think ‘skipper’ came from?

I like staffies quite a bit – I suppose you’d want something that is tenacious and will alert you to potential boat thieves. Also something that won’t get seasick. Most terriers would fit the bill.

Steven asks…

Starting a Dog Food Business – What else do I need apart from Doggie Treats & Pet Recipes?

DogTreatMan answers:

You need a strong business plan. Starting a pet bakery business for dogs requires not just culinary skills, but also background research into what your market wants.

Analyze the domestic dog population of the area you live in. Ask yourself these questions:
1. How many dog owners do you have in your neighborhood who need a dog food bakery service?
2. What kinds of dog breeds are the most popular in your area?
3. Is there a specific, common breed that you can focus on as your niche specialty?

Mary asks…

Is it okay to use different type of Dog food for “Treats”?

I feed my dog a different type of dog food, but I have a couple of 4oz dog food sample bags. All are dry food and I intend to use it as treats for training. I wouldn’t give him more than 20 pieces a day.

Is this okay? Since I know dogs digestive system works different than ours and you can’t feed them different types of dog food every day.

Thanks.

DogTreatMan answers:

Mine get sample dog food as treats all the time but they aren’t too picky about their treats.

James asks…

If I feed my dog his food according to the suggested amount but want to feed treats too must I reduce the food?

would this be healthy? I can’t not give my dog treats but I don’t want him to get fat. So if I feed treats also, do I need to cut the food down?

DogTreatMan answers:

Naaahh! Would you only give your kid 1/2 portion of dinner if you gave them a candy bar a few hours earlier? Its a treat! Treat it as such!

If your worried about him getting fat, just add an extra 30mins of activity. If your using treats to train, don’t bother adding activity as he will probably burn off that treat with the training. Goodluck!

Jenny asks…

Can you use human food coloring on dog treats?

It is ASPCA Day on April 10th and I am hoping to be able to make dog treats and bring them to my local humane society. I was wondering (since ASPCA is ALL orange) can I use some orange food coloring (human) on the dog treats I plan to make? Or is there a natural way I can get such as carrots. How can I do that if I need to do natural?

Thanks!

DogTreatMan answers:

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen dog food with food coloring so I don’t think it would hurt- there was a news story about a woman coloring her dog pink with food coloring and getting a fine- strange but that could be further evidence that it can’t be that harmful

Chris asks…

HELP! What Is a good dog food, treat and toy I can give my newly adopted chihuahua?

I just adopted a chihuahua and I want to be sure to give her a good dog food. If anyone can please help with advice on good dog food, treats and toys I would appreciate it.

DogTreatMan answers:

The BEST dog food is the raw diet- predator/prey model speficially. Rawlearning.com has a ton of information regarding that.
If you’re not interested in feeding raw, try looking at www.dogfoodanalysis.com to find good dog foods. The best dog foods don’t have grains or fillers, and have the most meat. Things like Orijen, Wellness, Innova EVO, etc.
Science Diet is a poor food- unfortunately today’s vets are not taught well regarding nutrition, they are given a ton of propaganda by dog food companies.
Purina is not a good brand either.

Toys- I’m not sure what chihuahuas like- I own a Great Dane so he gets large and tough toys. Try a few different ones at the pet store- squeakers, plushs, and tougher toys.

Treats- raw meat! Otherwise.. Kongs are good. You can fill them with other treats and peanut butter.

Richard asks…

Good dog gift besides clothes, food treats or toys under $20?

I’m getting my niece and my nephew presents since I’m visiting my sister soon. As you can guess, they are dogs. Well I’m getting Briscoe (my nephew, a black cocker spaniel) a sweater/shirt thing but I’m stumped on what to get my sister’s boyfriend’s dog Sasha (my kind-of niece, a golden retriever) something thats good and cute, but not clothes, collars, food dishes, toys, etc. and it has to be under $20. Please help?

DogTreatMan answers:

Wow, you have eliminated a lot of possibilities… I usually make dog cookies and get a favorite toy (kong, kong ball, nylabone, frisbee) and make some bandannas for the pup of the family I am visiting and put it all in a basket with a bottle of local wine, local specialty cheese and chutney for the hosts. (I always have extra inexpensive baskets about). Hmm.. All that is left out of that list is a gift card!
